BoatDriver – learning software for the boating licence
Learning and exam software for the Swiss boating licence (cat. A/D): theory films, flashcards, exam simulation with correction mode and readiness bar, plus marine radio (SRC) and later AutoDriver (car theory). AS3 rebuild with an XML engine, four languages, LiveUpdate and a Mac version.
Developed 2007–2015 for Niels Frederiksen and BoatDriver GmbH. BoatDriver Swiss prepares learners for the Swiss theory exam for motorboats (category A) and sailing boats (category D), in German, French, Italian and English, with an extra module for the High Rhine. In the theory section, animated films with voice-over explain the 15 topics, from lights and sound signals to knots and weather. The matching exam questions can be opened directly from each topic.
In “Learn”, the questions are worked through as a flashcard stack per topic, with a progress display. Like the official exam, the exam simulation puts together 60 questions with a time limit, favouring questions that are not yet mastered. Afterwards a correction mode marks every answer red or green with a link back to the theory, and a readiness bar sums up the most recent exams.
The project started in 2007 as an XML-driven Flash navigation in ActionScript 2 for the BoatDriver CDs; marine radio (SRC) and the German recreational boating licences followed. From 2011 the software was rebuilt from scratch in ActionScript 3: one engine that reads products, languages, questions and exam rules entirely from XML. On this basis came LiveUpdate, the Mac version, a flipbook for the theory book and, in 2014, AutoDriver for the car theory test (categories B, A, A1, M, F, G).
